Dinner @ Fung Seng Lao, Kuala Lipis, Pahang, Malaysia

Date:  31 August 2012
Place: Restoran Fung Seng Lao, Kuala Lipis, Pahang, Malaysia
Dish: Bean Curd, "Yew Mak" (Chinese Lettuce), Stir-Fried Sweet Potato Leaves, Steamed River Fish, Claypot Kampung Chicken in Ginger Style, Fish Paste in Spring Onion and Ginger
Price About RM140 (for 9 persons, including rice and Chinese Tea)

Continuing from my previous post on our trip to Kuala Lipis...

Kuala Lipis is a small town in Pahang, and is the birth place of my dad and is where my grandma and uncle still lives. For dinner, we ate at Fung Seng Lo, which according to my uncle is the only Chinese restaurant in Kuala Lipis which serves nice food (well, not that there are that many restaurants in Kuala Lipis). We have been eating here almost every Chinese New Year for the past several years, and so far so good!

My favourite here is the fish paste! It is up to the individual to judge of course, but for me it is absolutely one of the best fish paste I ever tasted. It was the fist time I tasted the fish paste at the restaurant, and I hope they can maintain the standard each time!  Overall the food taste home-cooked, and I just love it. Strange, but  I seem to like everything that I eat here in Kuala Lipis...

Bean Curd Galore!

I love bean curd, and this dish is tasty!

The faithful "Yew Mak" (Chinese Lettuce)

One of my grandma's favourite dish is the Chinese Lettuce ("Yew Mak"). It was not overcooked, just right and very crunchy.

Stir-Fried Sweet Potato Leaves
This is another of my favourite vegetable i.e Stir-Fried Sweet Potato Leaves. Yummy..

Steamed River Fish
A favourite among patrons of this restaurant is the steamed river fish. The meat is so fresh and juicy, and coupled with the gravy, it is really yummy.

Claypot Kampung Chicken in Ginger Style
You can taste the sweetness of the "kampung" chicken in this dish.

Fish Paste in Spring Onion and Ginger

And last but not the least, my favourite dish of all- The Fish Paste!

If you are wondering where this place is located, it is next to Public Bank (there is only one Public Bank in Kuala Lipis), near the roundabout.

Curry Chicken and Curry Fish Head @ Restoran Ratha, Raub, Pahang, Malaysia

Date:  31 August 2012
Place: Restoran Ratha, Raub, Pahang, Malaysia
Dish: Curry Chicken, Fried Chicken, Curry Fish Head, Fried Bean Sprouts,
Price About RM80 (for 4 persons, including rice and drink)

We went back to my grandma's place in Kuala Lipis on National Day for a night's stay. On the way back, we will normally stop at Raub for lunch, either at my aunty's house, or in one of the eateries in Raub. On that day, we decided to stop by Restoran Ratha, which is famous for its curry chicken and curry fish head. I think it has the most number of patrons on festive holidays, in particular Chinese New Year and Hari Raya as lots of urbanites would be heading back to their hometown (or better known as  "kampung" locally), and lots of them would be stopping  by Ratha either to eat in or take-away. Apart from the nice food, the service is quite fast, as we did not have to wait long for the dishes to arrive.

Curry Chicken

I love the curry chicken. The meat is sweet and  tender, and the curry is full of spices!

Fried Chicken

Another must try is the Fried Chicken. Fried Chicken is not one of my favourite, but I absolutely love this one. The skin for me is just right, and the meat is sweet and juicy. Yummyy..

Curry Fish Head
Another must try is the Curry Fish Head. The fish is fresh and tasty, and lots of spices have been used in the curry. You  might start to perspire once you dip into this dish as it can be a little spicy :-)

Fried "Taugeh" (Bean Sprouts)
The fried bean sprouts is crunchy and is a nice addition to the meaty meal.

"Curryful" lunch at Ratha :-)

It seems that the Sultan of Selangor has frequent this place as well, as is shown by the pictures on the wall!

It is hard to miss this place. It is a corner shop along Jalan Tun Razak, and with its big sign board, you will definitely see it. But just in case you do miss it, just stop your car and ask people around you, as everyone in Raub will know this place, for sure. :-)

Bariani Power House @ Ramadan Bazaar SS18/6, Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia

Date: 28 July 2012
Place: Bariani Power House @ Ramadan Bazaar SS18/6, Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia
Dish: Nasi Beriani Gam Kambing (RM10), Lemang & Rendang (RM6), Fresh Orange Juice (RM3)
Price:  RM19

Residents in Subang Jaya are blessed to have a Ramadan Bazaar nearby, located in SS18/6. Every year without fail, like many other families in Subang Jaya, we will pay an annual visit to the bazaar to pack our dinner, or simply buy some local pastries for tea time. I am quite sure the Ramadan Bazaar at SS18/6 is one of the more successful ones in the Klang Valley. In spite of the ongoing LRT works carried out parallel to the bazaar, the bazaar continued to be in operation although at a smaller scale with reduced number of stalls. It did not come as a surprise when this bazaar was included in the top 10 list of Ramadan Bazaar in the Klang Valley by MalaysianDigest.com, which is quite telling on its popularity.

I think everyone has his or her own favourite food at this bazaar, but for me as well as the rest in the family, a must buy is the Nasi Beriani Gam Kambing at Bariani Power House. Every year, we will be looking out for this stall and religiously wait in line for our order. My personal favourite is the Nasi Beriani Kambing which cost RM10 per pack and could easily be shared by 2 persons :-) The rice is very tasty, and so is the "kambing" (mutton) which taste so juicy and yummy. Just writing about it now is enough to make me drool. Nasi Beriani is essentially rice cooked with spices and meat. There are many varieties of Nasi Beriani and no doubt the one served at Bariani Power House is one of my favourite!

Another one of my favourite in the Ramadan Bazaar is the Lemang. Lemang is made of glutinous rice and coconut milk, and is cooked in a hollowed bamboo stick. It is usually served with Rendang, a spicy meat gravy. To quench our thirst, we went for a stall selling fresh orange juice. There are many other foodstuff that you can try at the bazaar e.g. Ayam Golek, Cucur Udang, Kebab, Satay, and lots more!

If you are looking to sample some Ramadhan food and happen to be in Subang Jaya, you should really drop by this bazaar and head straight for the Nasi Beriani Gam Kambing from Bariani Power House, and the Lemang from the Lemang stall :-)

Bon Appetite!

Chinese Lunch @ Dian Xiao Er, Vivo City, Singapore

Date: 21 July 2012
Place: Dian Xiao Er, Vivo City, Singapore
Dish: Herbal Duck, Baby 'Kailan', Claypot Tofu, Steamed Cod Fish

We were going to board the bus (via Aeroline) back to KL from Vivo City Singapore, and we were treated to lunch at Dian Xiao Er that was famous for its Duck dishes, which is cooked in chinese herbal ingredients.

We ordered the restaurant's signature Herbal Duck, Claypot Tofu, Baby 'Kailan'. and Steamed Cod Fish. Loved the Herbal Duck the best. The meat is so tender and juicy, and the absence of the very strong taste that is very often present in most duck dishes (which is why duck do not rank very high on my favourite food list) makes this one of the best meat dishes that I ever tasted! I am already thinking to eat this on my return to Singapore.

We have a very nice view of Sentosa Island from the restaurant, which was just across Vivo City. I like the ambience of the restaurant too, as it brings you back in time, like dining in some traditional chinese restaurant in Taiwan/ China.

This restaurant is an absolute must try. Check out their website (link at the bottom of the page) for more info..I must thank the really wonderful family of Mr and Mrs Liew for treating both mom and me to this really yummy lunch! :-D

Chinese Dinner @ Peach Garden, Supertree Dining, Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Date: 20 July 2012
Dish: Steamed Chicken, Roasted Duck, Roasted Pork, Stir-Fried Long Beans in Sambal, Brinjal with minced pork in Claypot, Stewed Sea Cucumber in Claypot, Squid fried in salted egg, Claypot Tofu.

After a day of walking at the Gardens by the Bay, it was already near dinner time, and we were quite hungry by then. We decided to dine at Supertree Dining, located inside the Gardens by the Bay.
There was a long queue, and we waited for about half an hour before we finally got to be seated.

It did not take long for the dishes to arrive after our order was taken. Of all the dishes ordered, I loved the stewed sea cucumber and roasted pork meat the best, though the rest tasted very good as well.

One comment though, our order for the dessert took a little long to arrive. Overall the food is good. Apart from the waiting time to be seated, I have no other complaints :-)

After finishing our dinner, we went out to admire the night scene of the Gardens, and took a few photos before we headed back. It did not take me long before I doze off that night, dreaming of the beautiful flowers I saw at the Gardens by the Bay....ahhhhhhh...

Tea Time @ Cafe Crema, Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Date: 20 July 2012
Place: Cafe Crema, Gardens by the Bay,Singapore
Dish & Price: See below

After our tour of the Cloud Forest in Gardens by the Bay, we were already quite tired, as the place is rather huge. Walking into the Cloud Forest gives you the feeling of walking into a real forest, complete with waterfalls, and nature singing along the way. Simply superb! Gardens by the Bay just opened at the end of June 2012, hence we were very lucky to visit this beautiful place not too long after its opening. Nevertheless, we needed to wait about 45 minutes before we finally got our tickets to the 2 conservatories due to the long queue of visitors!

The place is simply amazing. I really recommend every tourist to Singapore (and locals alike!) to drop by this place.  The time spent here will be well worth it. Lovers of nature, plants, and flowers will be lost in a wonderland of flowers and plants from all parts of the world! The Flower Dome was the other conservatory which we visited, and we were speechless when we saw the many varieties of beautiful plants and flowers on display. Walking in the conservatories is very pleasant as the temperature is quite cool. Check out their website at http://www.gardensbythebay.com.sg.

For dining, there are several choices as well (you can check out their website for more info). We stopped for teatime at an Italian-styled cafe known as Cafe Crema to enjoy their gourmet coffee and signature breads and pastries. The brioche, cranberry swirl, croissant, and apricot danish (not shown below) tasted really fresh and yummy. In short, it is really a great place to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee. Once we were well rested and energized, we proceeded our walk to the next dome. I just couldn't hide my excitement on our way to the second dome...
