Famous Steamed Fish @ Serdang Lama, Selangor, Malaysia

Date: 24 February 2012
Place: Serdang Lama, Selangor, Malaysia (near SJK (C) Kung Man)
Dish: Steamed "Tilapia", Fried "Fu Chuk" Roll (Bean Curd Roll), "Kung Po" Sotong (Squid), and "Yew Mak" (Chinese Lettuce)

Price: RM74 (include rice and jasmine tea for 5 persons)

I was told of this really popular place for steamed fish in Serdang a few times before, and finally decided to eat here for lunch today. The person who informed me seemed quite confident that I will not be disappointed. Not wanting to miss the chance of tasting this famous dish, I trailed along, in spite of the scorching afternoon heat.

The restaurant is located in front (or is it at the back?) of SJK(C) Kung Man. Since it was a hot afternoon, we proceeded straight to the air-conditioned area, but alas, though there were empty tables, these were all reserved. We had to resort to sitting outside where even though it was shady, it was rather hot.

The first dish that we ordered was their signature steamed "Tilapia", followed by Fried "Fu Chuk" Roll (Bean Curd Roll), "Kung Po" Sotong (Squid), and "Yew Mak" (Chinese Lettuce). All tasted good, but the dish that stood out best was no doubt the steamed "Tilapia" fish. The fact that it was the common dish on every table should speak for itself. The tastiness of the fish could be due to the way it is prepared. I was told that the fish is first steamed for awhile, before rinsing it in cold water, and then steaming it again until the fish is cooked. The result is a fish that is very fresh and juicy, and with a gingery taste coming from the ginger topping.

Food aside, the place is quite old. However, looking at the number of people eating there, I guess they do not mind this at all, even if it means sitting outside and perspiring while eating your meal! Definitely worth a try if you haven't been here :-)
