Duck & Honey-Glazed BBQ Pork Wanton Noodle/ Mee @ Serdang Duck Wang, Seri Kembangan, Selangor, Malaysia

Date: 8th April 2012
Place: Serdang Duck Wang, Seri Kembangan, Selangor, Malaysia
Dish: Duck & Honey-Glazed BBQ Pork Wanton Noodle/ Mee
Price: RM6 + RM1.50 for Yin Yong (Tea & Coffee Mix)

The word 'Wang' in the title of this place literally translates into Emperor/ King. Hence, Serdang Duck Wang translates into Serdang Duck King/ Emperor. Hmmm.. is the owner of this coffee shop saying that the duck meat served here is the best in Serdang? Well, this morning I had the privilege to try it out and confirm for myself:-)

Situated at Serdang Commercial Centre, just opposite Affin Bank, one simply can't miss the sign- Serdang Duck Wang. As you are sitted, you will see several newspaper clippings adorning the walls of this coffee shop, showing the picture of a man in his 50s with a big radiant smile standing in front of his food counter. This man I later found out was the founder of this place :-)

We were served by a young man who bears a striking resemblance to the man in the picture. I was told that this was his son, continuing his father's cooking legacy and is running this coffee shop. His father on the other hand, is manning another branch, also in Serdang!

Now back to the food. My choice was Duck & Honey-Glazed BBQ Pork Wanton Noodle/ Mee.  The duck meat was tender and juicy, and the pork and noodle tasted very good too. I ended the meal with a traditional cup of hot Yin Yong (i.e. a mix of tea and coffee), a drink originating from Hong Kong.

YES, the place do deserves its name :-) If you happen to be in Serdang and is craving for Duck/ Wanton Noodle, this place is definitely worth a try.

Tip: You may need one and a half portion of noodle to satisfy your appetite ;-)

Fried Mamak Mee and Green Tea Cake @ Garden Cafe, the Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Date: 14 April 2012
Place: Garden Lifestyle Store & Cafe @ Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Dish: Mamak Mee and Green Tea Cake
Price: See below

We were at the MidValley Megamall and the Gardens Mall today. I will normally come to the shopping malls when there is something that I need to buy, and both Malls is a great place when you need to compare prices before you make a purchase (it's really a one-stop shop!). As usual, weekends at most popular malls in Malaysia are packed with people- from all races, gender, and from the very young to the very old.

After a few hours of walking and checking different shops in the mall, I was a little hungry and Fried Mamak Mee came to mind. One would not normally have Fried Mamak Mee in a shopping mall when you are spoilt for choices. Fried Mamak Mee is a dish that one would usually eat in a "Mamak" stall.

Hence I was not sure if we could find any "authentic" Fried Mamak Mee here. Having tasted the Fried Mamak Mee at the Garden Lifestyle Store & Cafe, my better half brought me here. This place is located in the MidValley Megamall just before the link bridge to the Gardens Mall, and with its beautiful garden-themed decor and ambience, one will definitely not miss this place.

Fried Mamak Mee is basically noodles fried with fish paste and/ or chicken meat, vegetables, prawns, eggs and is normally spicy. The Fried Mamak Mee was good, so yes, I would recommend this place if one craves for it while shopping here. Price of course is on the high side due to the location and ambience. For dessert, I had Green Tea Cake. It was OK. I still prefer the one at RT Pastry which for me is the best bakery around. Drink was a pot of Camomile Tea, a refreshing finish to the meal:-)

P:S: For the benefit of non-Malaysian readers of my blog, here is a definition of Mamak from Wikipedia:
'A mamak stall, is a food establishment which serves mamak food. In Malaysia, the term mamak refers to Tamil Muslims, who generally own and operate them. Although traditionally operated from roadside stalls, some modern mamak stall operators have expanded their businesses into restaurant or cafe-type establishments. Mamak stalls tend to be popular among Malaysian youths as hang out spots, due to cheap food and beverages being served 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.'

Dish: Fried 'Lala', Salt Grilled 'Tilapia', 'Steamed 'Tilapia', 'Tom Yum Seafood Soup', Grilled Lamb Cutlets, Fried Mix Vegetables, Fried Squid, Mango Sticky Rice

"There is this very special dining place, which is deep in the jungle, where you have to go through bumpy and winding roads", he said. "Really?" I asked in bewilderment. "Yes, and we shall go there one day"... These were his description of the place that he went sometime ago when he was younger, and it sparked my imagination about this place since then and has wished the day will come sooner!

AND I FINALLY got the chance to dine here yesterday...

It was quite a drive, passing through long roads, and going up hill, then down hill where the roads were bumpy. You can't but imagine what would be at the bottom of the road, as everywhere else was dark but for one or two street lights, and a sign pointing to 'Veg Fish Farm Thai' which tells you that you must be on the right track. When we finally reached the bottom, the Restaurant was waiting for us there, almost like a food "oasis", after a long journey.

Since the last  time he came, the place has grown more than triple its size, with many more tables, and patrons, and workers too.

Our choice for the night was seven dishes consisting of Fried Lala, Grilled and Steamed Tilapia, Tom Yum Seafood Soup, Grilled Lamb Cutlets, Fried Mix Vegetables, and Fried Squid. And for dessert, it was Mango Sticky Rice, Glutinous Tapioca, and Fried Banana. If I had to choose two of my favorites for the night, it would have to be the Tilapia in both styles (i.e. Grilled and Steamed), as the meat is very fresh and juicy. Loved the Tom Yum Seafood Soup as well.

P/S: Fried Squid, Glutinous Tapioca, and Fried Banana is not shown below.

Date: 1st April 2012
Place: El Toro Butchery & Grill, Subang Avenue, Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia
Dish: Lamb Grill (Lamb Shoulder)
Price: RM52.35 (include tea- RM5.50 & 10% service charge)

On April Fool's day, we decided to have Lamb Grill at El Toro Butchery & Grill at Subang Avenue. This would be our second visit to this place that is famous for its steak.

You can have a choice of lamb, beef, chicken and fish, but lamb has always been our favourite, and we went with Grilled Lamb Shoulder, and we liked it medium-well. The meat was so tender and juicy!  :-)..

This place is definitely recommended for meat lovers. Apart from the food, it has a nice ambience with good customer service. Apart from the mosquitoes, everything else was good :-)

Looking forward to my next meal at El Toro :-)
